PLAN, Inc. proudly offers the Martin Luther King, Jr. Summer Internship and Fellowship Programs, embodying our commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within our Network.
Established in 1991, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Summer Internship Program was designed to increase diversity among the attorneys in our Network, enabling us to better represent the client communities we serve. The Pennsylvania Legal Services Black Caucus worked with the programs in the network, together, to make this program a reality.
Each summer, ten placements are awarded to first- and second-year law students at the legal aid organizations in our Network, where they gain valuable experience working with communities in need throughout Pennsylvania. Over the last thirty years, our program has supported more than 400 law students.
In 2004, we launched the Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowship Program after an evaluation of the internship program revealed the need to bolster greater diversity and representation among our Network's staff.
This initiative partners with a regional or specialty program in our Network to hire law school graduates and newly licensed attorneys as full-time staff attorneys for a two-year fellowship. Fellowships are designed to help aspiring attorneys interested in long-term public interest positions and are not restricted to two years.
