A Practical Push for Civil Legal Services

December 20, 2010

This editorial, published in the New York Times on December 19, 2010, endorses the plan of New York State’s chief judge, Jonathan Lippman, who wants the state to spend an additional $25 million next year for lawyers to represent the poor in civil cases that deal with “the essentials of life,” like eviction and child support. The editorial states that Judge Lippman rightly argues that this is an essential investment for the sake of both the fairness and the efficiency of the state’s court system.
