Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project Releases Annual Report
The Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project has released its 2024 Annual Report. In these ever-changing times, PILP continues to work hard in protecting the rights of everyone who is incarcerated and detained in Pennsylvania. PILP is committed to making sure that people are treated humanely, as required by the Constitution and federal law.
2024 was a prime example of the tremendous dedication of PILP’s staff. PILP successfully settled a case on behalf of an immigration detainee held at Pike County Correctional Facility, where he was pepper sprayed while handcuffed and shackled, and placed naked in a restraint chair for hours. PILP also obtained a meaningful settlement on behalf of a woman who was sexually abused in the Philadelphia jails.
PILP negotiated a class action settlement that will result in top-down reform of Allegheny County Jail’s system of treating and housing people with psychiatric disabilities and mental illness. These legal victories, combined with the expansion of our cutting-edge work in the field of MOUD access in Prisons helped make 2024 a truly transformative year for the organization.
