PBA "Day on the Hill" Provided Opportunities to Meet with Legislators and Advocate for Legal Aid

The 13th Annual Pennsylvania Bar Association "Day on the Hill", held on May 3 in Harrisburg, offered association members chances to meet face-to-face with legislators to discuss concerns facing the legal profession such as inadequate funding endangering the viability of civil legal services and the courts, and the proposed sales tax on legal services.

The day began with 2009-10 PBA President Clifford E. Haines moderating a presentation offering advice about summarizing key issues and how to effectively communicate them to legislators. Included on the panel discussing these issues were Sen. Jane Earll (R - Erie County); Sen. Michael O'Pake (D - Berks); Rep. Kathy Manderino (D - Montgomery and Philadelphia); Rep. Bryan Cutler (R - Lancaster County); Andrew F. Susko, past PBA president; Samuel W. Milkes, Executive Director of Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network Inc.; and Dan A. Schulder, Cozen O'Connor.

The afternoon featured continuing legal education sessions entitled "The Impact of Citizens United on Pennsylvania" and "Justice is the Business of Government".  The day concluded with an early evening reception with legislators in the Capitol Rotunda.
