Webinar: Racial Justice in the Housing Rights Movement

National Housing Law Project logoThe National Housing Law Project is hosting a discussion, via webinar, on advancing racial justice in the housing movement entitled Racial Justice in the Housing Rights Movement on Thursday November 19, 2020 at 1:00 PM Eastern.

We have seen and learned a lot in the last four years, not to mention the last fifty. Legal aid and housing justice attorneys have done much to advance racial justice in our country, but we need to do more.

  • What does advancing racial justice in our larger housing movement look like? Within our own organizations? In our policy making?
  • How do we put racial and gender justice at the center of our work, rather than as additional considerations? What practices can be used to ensure our work is intersectional?
  • How do we call out and redress past and ongoing racism and gender discrimination against tenants and low-income homeowners?
  • How can legal services support Black and Brown tenants and organizers in their leadership of the housing justice movement?
  • What are the next steps for our network to continue this conversation and advance the work?

Panelists:

  • Demetria McCain, NHLP Board Member and President of the Inclusive Communities Project (moderator)
  • Rasheedah Phillips, Managing Attorney for Housing Policy at Community Legal Services of Philadelphia
  • Tara Raghuveer, Founding Director of Kansas City Tenants and the Home Guarantee Campaign Director at People’s Action
