PA Supreme Court Justice Greenspan Elected to the American Law Institute

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Jane Cutler Greenspan has been elected to membership in the prestigious American Law Institute. The Philadelphia-based ALI is a nationwide organization made up of nearly 4,200 jurists, lawyers and law professors who work to clarify, modernize and improve the law. Through their participation, members have an opportunity to influence the development of law in existing and emerging areas.

Appointed to the Supreme Court in July 2008, Justice Greenspan was among 68 new members elected to the ALI that was founded in 1923 by a group of prominent incorporators that included former President William Howard Taft.

“The members of the ALI are deeply dedicated professionals who are helping to ensure the preservation of a sound justice system and its need to adapt to changing societal ways,” Justice Greenspan said. “I am both honored and delighted to be able to bring my knowledge and experience to such a distinguished group to contribute to the public good.”

Justice Greenspan previously served on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and the Appellate Procedural Rules Committee. She also previously served on the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee and the Orphans Court Procedural Rules Committee. She was an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia for more than 10 years, serving as Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit from 1978 to 1980 and was an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1989-1994.

A graduate of Smith College, Justice Greenspan earned her Juris Doctorate magna cum laude from Rutger's University School of Law where she was an editor of the law review. She also clerked for former Chief Justice of Pennsylvania Robert N. C. Nix, Jr. from 1973 to 1975.
