Laurence Tribe of Justice Dept. to speak at CLS Breakfast of Champions
On May 27, 2010 the U.S. Justice Department’s Laurence Tribe will give the keynote address at Community Legal Services’ Breakfast of Champions, which will be held at 8:00 a.m. at the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel. The annual event will be attended by nearly 200 guests, including attorneys, public officials, and community leaders.
A former Harvard Law professor and mentor to President Barack Obama, Tribe is renowned for his expertise in Constitutional Law and currently serves as senior counselor for Access to Justice, a new initiative of the Department of Justice to improve the legal help provided to low-income people.
With a mission to help low-income people obtain equal access to justice, Community Legal Services is a fitting venue for Tribe to speak. Since its founding in 1966, CLS has provided over one million low-income Philadelphia residents with legal advice and representation, and helped countless more through education and advocacy efforts.
For the past twenty one years, the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association has sponsored CLS’ annual Breakfast of Champions, which honors leaders, innovators, and dedicated servants of public interest law through its Champion of Justice and Equal Justice awards and kicks off CLS’ Bar Campaign.
This year, CLS will present a Champion of Justice Award to State Representative Kathy M. Manderino, and Equal Justice Awards to Michael J. Boni of Boni & Zack LLC, CLS Paralegal Johnie Mae Coles, and Philadelphia Legal Assistance Executive Director Anita Santos-Singh.
