NLADA Offers Scholarships to New Attorneys to Attend NLADA Centennial Conference

The National Legal Aid and Defender Association will award thirty scholarships for new attorneys to attend the NLADA Centennial Conference to be held at the Washington Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC on December 7-10, 2011.

The scholarships will cover the cost of registration and hotel cost. Scholarship recipients will only need to cover transportation and per diem costs. The Centennial only comes once every 100 years, so don't miss out on this chance to attend!!

Connect with your peers who share your passion for social justice and providing indigent defense and free legal services for low-income people. Attend sessions, from the over 130 offered, that provide cutting-edge expertise, information and best practices. Network with others, brand new to their work to seasoned professionals, from around the country and hear about what others are doing to connect with their client communities, hear about the needs in those communities and do what is necessary to meet that need to further the goals of justice and fairness.

Eligibility for Scholarships:

To be eligible to receive Centennial Conference New Attorney Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be admitted to practice law in any state or jurisdiction in the United States for three years or less;
     
  • Be employed fulltime as an attorney in a legal aid, public defense or other equal justice organization dedicated to providing free civil or defender legal services to the poor;
     
  • Not have received a scholarship from NLADA to attend a training or conference in 2010 or 2011:
     
  • Complete and submit a registration form, noting "Scholarship Application" in a conspicuous location on the form, along with the scholarship application and other requested materials. (NOTE: Payment of the registration is not required to be eligible for the scholarship);
     
  • Submit a short, written statement of need (no more than 350 words), explaining the objectives for attending the conference and how conference attendance will impact your work;
     
  • Provide the names and contact information of two references who are knowledgeable about your commitment to equal justice;
     
  • Agree to submit a report and evaluation of the National Health Law Training by Friday, December 16, 2011, stating objectives achieved from conference attendance, and how this knowledge will be put to use in your work.

Award:

The total amount of each award shall not exceed $1,200 and will only cover the registration fee and accommodations at the overflow conference hotel for up to, but not exceeding, three nights (December 7 - 9). Scholarship recipients are responsible for all travel costs, meals, hotel accommodations beyond three nights, and incidentals outside of those included in the registration fee. Should hotel accommodations not be necessary, the scholarship amount will cover only the cost of the conference registration fee.

Deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 p.m. EST, Friday, November 4, 2011.
