MidPenn Legal Services Executive Director Receives United Way’s Grady Award

Rhodia D. Thompson receives the Grady Award from 2016 United Way Board Chair David M. Kleppinger.Rhodia D. Thomas, the Executive Director of MidPenn Legal Services, which helps low-income residents and victims of domestic violence, was recognized by the United Way of the Capital Region for her outstanding community service.

Thomas received the 2016 Grady Award for her outstanding leadership of her agency, which provides legal services for people throughout Central Pennsylvania in cases ranging from landlord-tenant disputes and mortgage foreclosures to obtaining health coverage.

“MidPenn Legal Services helps those who desperately need the help and advice of an attorney but would not be able to afford one,’’ said 2016 United Way Board Chair David M. Kleppinger.

“Unlike in criminal cases, in civil matters the law does not provide an attorney for those who cannot afford one,’’ said Kleppinger, who is also the chairman of the Central Pennsylvania-based law firm McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC. “Without the help of MidPenn’s attorneys, these civil cases could have devastating impacts on the lives of the agency’s clients and their families.’’

McNees has long supported MidPenn and one of the firm’s attorneys, James P. DeAngelo, serves as the agency’s president.

“Rhodia Thomas brings an unmatched level of compassion and dedication to her role as MidPenn Legal Services’ executive director,’’ DeAngelo said. “She never loses sight of the important safety net our organization provides.’’
