Support for Self-Represented Litigants in DV Cases (Webinar)

Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Inc. will  be presenting a webinar entitled Access to Justice:  Support for Self-Represented Litigants in DV Cases on January 17, 2019 from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM.

This is Part 1 of a two-part webinar presentation. Part 2 - Access to Justice: Support for Self-Represented Litigants Using Principles of Procedural Justice will be held on January 24, 2019 from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM.

In Pennsylvania family court cases, the vast majority of litigants are not represented by counsel.  This includes most survivors of domestic violence, who must navigate complex court systems and cases with little or no assistance.  For them, accessing potentially life-saving relief from the courts is a tremendously difficult, sometimes overwhelming task.

Only by providing broadly accessible, trauma-informed and culturally responsive assistance to self-represented survivors can the legal system and its stakeholders provide true access to justice.

This webinar, the first in a two-part series, will help legal service providers and others identify specific strategies to promote equal access to justice for self-represented litigants in cases involving domestic violence, exploring suggested practices for each key stage of family court proceedings, from information gathering by survivors through post-decree enforcement and modification.

To help participants enhance their own system's response, faculty will describe examples of successful strategies and approaches for better serving self-represented litigants in domestic violence cases from courts and communities across the country.
