Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services - Pennsylvania Bar Association
Position Summary:
The Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services is responsible for assisting local bar associations, legal services programs and other groups who offer pro bono services in the Commonwealth.
In addition to providing support and assistance in the development of pro bono programs where none currently exist, the Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services will help providers to improve services that are now being offered.
Additional responsibilities include serving as a clearinghouse for information about pro bono programs, planning and staffing PBA Pro Bono events, serving as PBA staff liaison as needed in place of the Director of Pro Bono Services and other duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to performing any duties that may be assigned by the Director of Pro Bono Services, the Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services is responsible for the following:
- Work with local bar associations and other pro bono providers to assist in the design and development of programs in areas of the Commonwealth where none exist, as well as presenting awards at County Bar functions to promote Pro Bono across the Commonwealth.
- Assist local bar associations and other pro bono providers to improve current programs.
- Offer a statewide perspective on pro bono and the types of services that are available.
- Serve as a clearinghouse for information and ideas on pro bono and successful programs that have been developed in the Commonwealth and elsewhere.
- Help with the development and delivery of education and training programs for local pro bono providers.
- Plan and staff PBA Pro Bono events.
- Assist local bar associations and other entities to identify sources of funding for pro bono programs. (The Deputy Director of Pro Bono Services will not be responsible for filing applications for funding on behalf of local bar associations and other potential pro bono providers.)
- Work with local bar associations and other providers to help identify private attorneys who will agree to serve on pro bono panels.
- Work closely with the PBA Legal Services to the Public Committee and all other Committees and Sections of the PBA that develop and promote pro bono programs.
- Assist the Director of Pro Bono Services with administering the Pennsylvania Wills for Heroes Program.
- Promote Pennsylvania Free Legal Answers to PBA Members and County Bar Associations.
- Post cases to PA Pro Bono Matters. Answering emails and phone calls requesting the PBA’s help with legal aid.
- Supporting the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation efforts in Pro Bono Programing.
- Act as a liaison between PA IOLTA and Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network.
- Conduct legal aid needs clinics.
- Planning and conducting CLEs on Pro Bono topics.
Qualifications:
- Law degree required
- Some legal aid background preferred, i.e. documented pro bono service or legal aid professional staff experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Familiarity with technology
- Association experience preferred but not required
- Experience with organizations that use and recruit volunteers
Essential Functions:
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to make oral presentations before groups as required.
- Ability to communicate virtually using the latest technology.
- Ability to travel as required.
- Ability to plan, promote and staff a variety of Pro Bono and PBA events.
