Attorneys General Urge Congress to Appropriate Funding for Legal Services Corporation
On April 26, 2024, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent a letter to leaders of the U.S. House and Senate Appropriations Committees urging them to allocate robust funding for the nonprofit Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in the FY2025 budget. Each year LSC awards field grants to a network of nonprofit legal service providers who together extend legal assistance to low-income Americans in every county, state, and territory of the United States. The NAAG letter highlights the critical work performed by LSC’s grantees across the nation, from our urban centers to our small towns.
The letter, sent on behalf of a bipartisan coalition of 39 state and territory attorneys general, highlights the critical work performed by LSC’s grantees across all states and territories of our nation. NAAG and its members have advocated for adequate funding of LSC in policy letters sent to Congress in several previous fiscal years.
“The impact of LSC’s work is vital and delivers much-needed results to almost two million individuals and families annually who otherwise would not have access to civil justice. However, for every individual or family served, another’s needs go unmet due to lack of sufficient funding. We implore you to support these Americans by prioritizing investment in LSC. As attorneys general committed to equal access to justice, we thank you in advance for your partnership in helping LSC to deliver civil justice to those in greatest need.”
Attorneys general from the following states and territories signed the letter: Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Northern Mariana Islands, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, U.S. Virgin Islands, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
