Zembley v. Sullivan: A Look Back at the Landmark Supreme Court Case & Its Impact Today on Children’s SSI (Webinar)
Please join the DAP Planning Committee for a new training, Zembley v. Sullivan: A Look Back at the Landmark Supreme Court Case & Its Impact Today on Children’s SSI on May 23, 2024 from 2:00 PM-3:00 PM Eastern.
The Legal Services national class action win in Sullivan v. Zebley, 493 U.S. 521 (1990), found that the Social Security Administration had been violating then Social Security Act since the 1974 inception of the SSI program for children with disabilities by overly restricting eligibility to narrow Medical Listings of Impairments and failing to provide an individualized, holistic assessment of the child’s age appropriate functioning.
This session will look back for lessons learned from this collaborative and systemic advocacy effort, as well as to cast light on the continuing importance of the SSI children’s program as the country’s sole life-line of income support for the nation’s children with mental and physical disabilities and their parents and caretakers.
Presenter is Jonathan Stein, Of Counsel, Community Legal Services
