Cross-Cultural Competence, Asian Pacific Americans, and the Law (Webinar)

Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Inc. is hosting a webinar entitled Cross-Cultural Competence, Asian Pacific Americans, and the Law on  Monday, May 8, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. This training was envisioned and put together by the PLAN APA Staff Affinity Group.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are a diverse and fast-growing demographic in the United States, including Pennsylvania. While AAPI live in communities throughout the state, they often face linguistic and cultural barriers to accessing legal aid. AAPI are also underrepresented among legal aid staff.

This CLE provides an introductory overview of AAPI history and cultures, as well as information and tools to strengthen cross-cultural competence when working with AAPI in a legal setting.

Presenter: Robert Buscher is Associate Director of Organizational Culture at the Japan American Society of Greater Philadelphia and a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences Asian American Studies Program.

He is a film and media specialist, educator, arts administrator, and published author who has worked in non-profit arts organizations for over a decade. As a person of biracial Japanese American heritage who is deeply involved in his community, Rob also has an expertise in cultural sensitivity training, community organizing, and advocacy issues related to the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

Some of his career highlights include growing the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival into an internationally recognized leader in the film festival circuit (2013-2019), developing the Japanese Cinema and Asian American Studies curriculum at Arcadia University (2012-2018), and co-founding Zipangu Fest - the UKʼs first Japanese Film Festival (2009-2014).
