Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity (PLSE) is looking to one full-time attorney as of September 1, who would be PLSE’s second attorney.  The salary will be set in accordance with the Community Legal Services pay scale.  In the meantime, PLSE is hoping that candidates for the position will be able to volunteer at least 4-6 hours per week over the summer, with all services (except court appearances and client intakes) capable of being rendered remotely at times convenient for the attorney.

ABOUT PLSE:   Founded in 2010, PLSE provides free legal representation to low income residents of Philadelphia whose criminal records are holding them back from achieving their potential as productive, contributing citizens.  The services include seeking expungements in criminal court, educating elected and community leaders, and empowering under-resourced communities to seek a greater voice and needed legislative reforms. PLSE was twice recognized in 2017 as an exemplary non-profit, with both a 2018-19 Barra Award, and the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation’s Goffman Award.

ABOUT THE POSITION:   Staff Attorney will have direct client contact and be primarily responsible for preparing clients for expungement hearings, representing them in court, and arguing contested expungement petitions.  Staff Attorney will help prepare and provide community education around criminal record histories and pathways to pardons; participate in client intake sessions and explain criminal record histories and the expungement and pardon processes to potential clients; and draft, review, file and argue expungement petitions. Staff counsel will be responsible for helping to manage the PLSE Pro Bono Paralegal Project.  Staff Attorney will also participate in the creation of PLSE’s new Pardons Project, which will launch in the fall of 2018. Staff Attorney will report directly to the Managing Attorney, and be responsible for duties as assigned by the Managing Attorney.

BENEFITS:  PLSE provides health and professional liability insurance, and membership in at least one professional legal organization.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:  The successful candidate(s) must be an attorney in good standing of the bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, have an interest in the criminal and/or public interest law, and have a demonstrated commitment to social justice.  Legal writing is not expected to be a material part of the position. The successful candidate(s) must be organized; work well in teams; be flexible and willing to share in whatever work needs doing; and have empathy with our clients, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a good sense of humor.
