The NLS secretary is responsible for providing administrative support and conduct administrative tasks and duties including handling and receiving information.  Secretaries report to the Director of Program Performance for conduct and execution of duties must at all times be in a manner consistent with program policies as established by the NLS Board of Directors and the NLS Executive Director, including the obligation to maintain client confidentiality.   • Typing; word processing/keyboarding on a computer; proofreading; electronic or manual filing of  files, legal pleadings, letters, and other documents;
  • Scanning, copying, and collating materials
  • Ordering of medical records for attorneys
  • Operating standard office equipment
  • Making and receiving telephone calls and scheduling appointments and meetings
  • Maintaining court and office calendars and appointment systems
  • Opening and closing intakes and assembling office files, forms, and statistics
  • Opening, distributing and sending mail /email
  • Providing back-up for the receptionist or intake worker as required or assigned
  • Assisting in equipment/office inventories
  • Taking telephone messages for staff or answering inquires in their absence
  • Making and monitoring referrals to other appropriate agencies, organizations or Pro Bono partners
  • Maintaining the intake areas in good order and ensuring the intake units are properly supplied
  • Maintaining office supplies and routing supply requisitions to appropriate person
  • Maintaining adequate copies of resource materials/brochures
  • Maintaining client accounts as assigned
  • Performing all clerical and secretarial duties reasonably required for the operation of the assigned office;
  • Acting as receptionist or secretary as required or assigned
  • Participating, as requested or assigned, in efforts to advance the organization and any fundraising .


  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • At least one year of secretarial experience or the equivalent
  • Demonstrated computer competency in Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, and Data Entry
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with NLS staff, clients, and community organizations
  • Proficient in spelling, punctuation, grammar and other English language skills
  • Proven experience of producing correspondence and documents
  • Proven experience in managing information and communication

In addition to a starting salary of 24k per year, this position also includes:
