Employment Unit Paralegal - Community Legal Services of Philadelphia
Community Legal Services, Inc. of Philadelphia is a non-profit public interest agency providing free civil legal services to low-income Philadelphia residents. As the largest provider of free civil legal services in the Philadelphia area, CLS is both locally and nationally renowned as a premier legal services provider dedicated to ensuring access to justice for all low-income individuals and communities. CLS has eight legal units covering a wide range of civil legal services. The Employment Unit, located at our 1424 Chestnut Street office, represents clients with employment-related problems, including tackling barriers to employment, seeking unpaid wages, and preserving jobs.
CLS is seeking a Paralegal for the Employment Unit. This is a full-time position. This position will focus on work supporting implementation of the new Clean Slate Law that will facilitate sealing of criminal records. Tasks will include:
- Screening clients for eligibility for criminal record sealing and providing clients with advice, under the supervision of attorneys.
- Community outreach about the new law, through attendance of resource fairs and organizing and presenting community education.
- File review at the Criminal Justice Center to determine grades of offenses in order to assist people in getting their records sealed.
- Advocacy to eliminate court fines and costs, in order to qualify people for record sealing.
- Other related work as assigned, including work assisting the unit’s attorneys.
Aptitude for or demonstrated skill in client interviewing, writing, public speaking and especially application of legal principles to clients’ situations are required.
Required Qualifications: Strong analytical skills are essential. Strong writing skills, computer literacy, the ability to learn complex material quickly, initiative, strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact well in a multi-cultural environment are required. Must also be willing and motivated to assist on substantive cases and administrative matters.
Other Preferred Qualifications: Two or four-year college degree strongly preferred. Persons formerly involved in the criminal justice system are encouraged to apply. Fluency in writing and speaking a language other than English, preferably Spanish, is preferred, but not required. Experience with a social services agency or a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of the poor is also favored.

This is a full-time position covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Community Legal Services, Inc. (CLS) and the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees, AFL-CIO and its affiliate District 1199C. The current minimum starting salary is $ 33,300 for entry-level applicants but that salary is subject to change or adjustment if an applicant has relevant years of experience and according to the provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement. Raises and benefits are also governed by that agreement.
