Oct 25: Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Board Service (Philadelphia)

The The Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association, as part of the Board Observer Program, is hosting this program, Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Board Service, on October 25, 2017 from 12:00 pm-2:15 pm at Philadelphia Bar Association, 11th Floor Conference Center, 1101 Market St., Philadelphia, PA 19107. This 2- hour CLE program will provide training on the basics of nonprofit board service, including charitable issues raised under state and federal laws for current board members. In the first hour, experienced faculty will highlight: Fiduciary duties of nonprofit board members Tax laws applicable to nonprofits Particular Pennsylvania laws related to charitable and nonprofit organizations of which board members should be aware This discussion will offer guidance to attorneys interested in serving on a nonprofit board and introduce them to the role of a Board of Directors and the laws governing nonprofits. Finally, drawing from the discussion in the first hour, a panel of Executive Directors and Board members of charitable organizations, will share their real-life experiences and give guidance regarding the expectations of service to those who are interested in joining a nonprofit board. The Pro Bono Committee of the Montgomery Bar Association is presenting this program entitled Criminal Record Expungements on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the George Washington Carver Community Center, 249 Jacoby Street, Norristown, PA 19401. This CLE will target those interested in the basics of filing an expungement in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. There will be a particular focus on the local procedure as well as common complications and themes that emerge when taking a pro bono case that comes out of Legal Aid. Speakers: Erica Braint, Esq. Oct 20: The Art of Representing a Child in the Legal Arena (Norristown)

The Montgomery Child Advocacy Project and the Montgomery Bar Association are offering a CLE program entitled The Art of Representing a Child in the Legal Arena on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm in the MBA CLE Room. This program is for any lawyer with the desire to represent children. Although litigation and family law experience are a plus, it is not necessary. Attend this dynamic seminar training lawyers to serve as guardians ad litem and legal counsel for children; presentations by the experts in the family law, juvenile law, dependency and criminal law; interact with the various entities who work with children in the legal and social service arenas; by completing this training, you will be prepared to serve as a child advocate in Montgomery County. The Allegheny County Bar Foundation will be holding its Fall Foundation Reception at the Renaissance Hotel on November 1, 2017 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm. The Board of Trustees of the Allegheny County Bar Foundation will host an evening of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres as they celebrate the foundation’s programs and accomplishments over the past year. The Fellows Class of 2017 will be inducted and the 2017 Pro Bono Achievement Awards will be presented. The Allegheny County Bar Foundation will be holding Cocktails for a Cause on October 26, 2017 from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Rivers Club in Pittsburgh. Come relax after work and enjoy a cocktail mixed by guest bartenders Bryan Neft, President-Elect of the Allegheny County Bar Association, and Pro Bono Award winner Joe Williams. The evening will include free appetizers and a raffle—all are welcome! Proceeds will benefit the Pro Bono Center.

Oct 25: First Judicial District Pro Bono Roll of Honor Reception (Philadelphia)

The First Judicial District recognizes the importance of performing pro bono work in order to ensure justice for the citizens of Philadelphia. It is also important to the First Judicial District to recognize the tremendous effort that many attorneys expend in providing pro bono services to litigants in the Court of Common Pleas or Municipal Court. Consequently, the First Judicial District will publish the Pro Bono Roll of Honor for 2017 and honor those attorneys at a reception on October 25, 2017. This reception is by invitation-only.

SeniorLAW Center is proud to once again be participating in National Pro Bono Week, a national effort to expand access to pro bono services, by recruiting and training new volunteers in various areas of law. SeniorLAW Center attorneys Wendy Bookler and Joanna Jarzebowska will be conducting a free training on October 23, 2017 from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, for attorneys interested in providing legal counseling through the PA SeniorLAW HelpLine, a toll-free telephone service offering free, confidential legal advice, brief services, information and referrals to those 60 and over throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Volunteers can make HelpLine calls from their own offices at times which fit into their schedules and choose the area(s) of law on which they would like to focus when counseling senior callers. The course will focus on the most common areas of law about which callers are seeking information and the professional responsibility requirements of pro bono and telephone helpline service. At this interactive training, attendees will also learn about the logistics of handling a HelpLine call and, once trained, will have access to resources to assist them in providing counseling and quality referrals over the telephone. CLE credits (1.5 substantive and .5 ethics) are available in exchange for two 2-hour shifts on the HelpLine. For security purposes and to order lunch, advance registration is required. You will: Become qualified to receive cases as a Child Advocates Volunteer Attorney Become certified to receive court appointments for dependency cases in Philadelphia County Experienced practitioners will show you what to expect and how to proceed when you take a dependency case. They’ll help you understand your role and the ethics of being a Child Advocates Volunteer Attorney and teach you the Standards of Practice for lawyers who represent children in abuse and neglect cases. Recognizing & Responding to Ethics and Practice Issues in Pro Bono Representation Philadelphia VIP in partnership with the Philadelphia Bar Association, is pleased to announce this annual training event, Pro Bono Opportunities Day, as part of National Pro Bono Week 2017. Plan to attend to learn how to recognize and respond to ethics and practice issues in pro bono representation. This CLE training will begin with opening remarks and then proceed into a poverty simulation. Faculty will then guide attendees through three segments that will examine the representation of clients with landlord/tenant, probate, and divorce issues highlighting ethical concerns and offering practice tips. The program will conclude with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. ALL attorneys volunteering to take a case will receive CLE credits FREE of charge. What is Jeans for Justice? – Employees of participating law firms and corporate legal departments make a small donation ($5, $10, etc.) for the right to dress in casual attire for the day instead of traditional business wear. Each office collects the donations from employees and submits the donations to the bar foundation. Feel free to mix it up! Opt for Halloween costumes, Steelers gear, or any other theme—all for a great cause. When is it? - This year’s Jeans for Justice day falls on October 27, but you can choose whatever day is convenient for your office.
