Veterans Legal Fellow

Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA) is hosting a one-year fellowship sponsored by Equal Justice Works through AmeriCorps to focus on addressing the legal needs of veterans. The attorney selected for the Fellowship will be housed at Neighborhood Legal Services Association’s Pittsburgh office. Per Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps Guidelines, the fellowship must begin between December 1 and December 15, 2017 and last for one year.

Fellowship Description: The Equal Justice Works Veterans Legal Fellow will:

  • Provide high quality legal services to veterans. In most instances, this will involve conducting intake, assembling evidence, conducting interviews, researching the relevant law, preparing pleadings, representing veterans in court and administrative matters, providing community outreach and education to Pennsylvanians regarding veteran legal issues and recruiting and engaging pro bono attorneys in veteran legal services.
  • Position is a one-year Fellowship, with a possible one-year extension contingent upon continued AmeriCorps funding.
  • The Fellow will be entitled to an AmeriCorps living allowance, plus other benefits.
  • Travel is required within the NLSA’s four-county service area which includes Allegheny, Beaver, Butler Lawrence County, PA.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Admitted to practice in Pennsylvania or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission in Pennsylvania;
  • The ability to undergo and pass AmeriCorps-mandated criminal background checks (only conviction for murder and/or presence on sex offender registry are automatic bars to service; other criminal convictions are allowable pursuant to Equal Justice Works review and approval)
  • A demonstrated commitment to public interest work and strong desire to assist indigent clients
  • Strong writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • The ability work collaboratively in a variety of contexts
  • Prior experience in managing independent projects or assignments
  • Law school clinic, externship, summer or other relevant practice experience
  • The ability to begin the fellowship no later than December 15, 2017.
