The Barbara J. Hart Justice Center, a Project of the Women’s Resource Center, is seeking a staff attorney. This is a full-time position in a three-attorney public interest/non-profit law firm.

Description of Position:

Provide legal information, consultation, and representation to survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence who are program participants of the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) in Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties of PA. Provide representation in various family law legal matters including but not limited to: protection from abuse (PFA), custody, child and spousal support, divorce, etc. Representation may include but not be limited to: interviewing, filing court documents, and court appearances (motions, conferences, trials, subsequent proceedings such as contempt hearings and appeals). Coordinate and work closely with WRC advocates to meet the legal needs and community-based needs of the program participant/client. Participate in trainings and activities on the local, state, and national levels. Conduct systems’ advocacy on behalf of survivors in regards to the court system, public assistance, law enforcement, social service agencies, and the community. Litigate in precedent setting cases at trial and appellate levels—develop litigation strategy, perform legal research, and draft briefs. Maintain appropriate filing system, records, and reports required by ethical standards, funding sources, and Legal Director. Actively participate in staff meetings, in-service trainings, organizational growth, and other related functions of the WRC. Maintain continuing legal education (CLE) credits as required for licensure.

Qualifications:

Law degree from accredited school and license to practice in PA. At least one year of family law experience preferred. Spanish-speaking or bilingual strongly preferred. Must successfully complete the WRC Crisis Intervention Training within six months of hire. Reliable transportation is essential as travel is necessary which may include ability to travel out of the area for overnight stays. Pass Act 33 and 34 clearances. Must be willing to schedule working hours to coincide with priorities of the Center.
