Our immigrant clients are facing many obstacles to accessing benefits at the County Assistance Office. The good news is that when immigrant families are able to overcome these fears and obstacles, most can safely receive the benefits they and their families are eligible to receive. During this webinar, we will discuss some of the main obstacles and fears immigrants applying for and receiving public benefits are facing and strategies for how to help as many eligible immigrant clients as possible access benefits. We’ll focus on these “hot topics”:

  • Public charge:  what is it, who is subject to it, and how might expected changes to public charge rules affect immigrants who are eligible for benefits?
  • Privacy: how does the County Assistance Office use the information an immigrant family provides on a benefits application?  Are there policies in place at the CAO that protect immigrant families’ information from disclosure?
  • Emergency Medicaid: what types of serious health conditions qualify for EMA and what must an immigrant do to prove that s/he has such a condition?
